Mesa Garden is a good USA source for cold hardy and non cold hardy South African succulents. They sell seeds and small plants. Their selection of mesembs (vygies) is especially impressive, and many of them are turning out to be quite frost resistant, especially in the drier regions of the western states. Denver Botanic Garden has many of them on display, Panayoti Kelaidis has pioneered the use of these hardy iceplants in the Denver area and nationally. In the east some species do better than others, for example Delosperma nubigenum is tolerant of winter rainfall, but others need more attention to good drainage or protection from rain in winter. Another combination that can be deadly in the east is hot muggy weather with repeated rainfall in summer, that does more damage than winter does to many species. There is still room to experiment with hardy mesembs, and the Mesa catalogue gives estimates of how much cold different genera/species can take. Delosperma is the best known genus for containing cold hardy species, but Rabaiea, Nananthus, and several others have at least some species worth trying out. Check them out at www.mesagarden.com/
